The 2020 Critics' Choice nominees

And so it begins ...

The awards season is upon us. The Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I'm a voting member, Sunday announced its nominations for the 25th annual Critics' Choice Awards. Winners will be announced Sunday, Jan. 13 in a program to be aired on the CW network.

The Irishman led all films with 14 nominations. It was followed by Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood, which garnered 12 nominations. Little Women received nine nominations. 1917 and Marriage Story followed with eight nominations each. Jojo Rabbit, Joker and Parasite earned seven nominations apiece.

I provide this year's list, which I suggest makes a good start for you to begin thinking about your own favorites for year-end honors. Here goes:

This year’s Critics’ Choice winners

The Broadcast Film Critics Association Sunday announced the winners of the 24th annual Critics’ Choice awards. Roma led the field with four awards. Black Panther and Vice followed, each winning three awards. As a member of the BFCA, I posted the Association’s nominees and now offer a list of the winners, including a surprise tie in the best-actress category (Glenn Close and Lady Gaga). This year's list also inlcudes a couple of anomalies: Roma won as both best foreign-language film and best picture and Christian Bale took double honors for playing Dick Cheney in Vice, winning in the best actor and best-actor-in-a-comedy categories.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA), of which I’m a member, is the largest film critics organization in the US and Canada, representing more than 330 television, radio and online critics.

If you’re interested in Oscar prognostications, I think you’ll find that the BFCA is a better bellwether than most other year-end honors.

Nominees for 24th Critics' Choice Awards

The Broadcast Film Critics Association has announced nominations for the 24th annual Critics' Choice Awards. The Favourite leads the way with 14 nominations. Black Panther follows with 12 nominations.

I'm a member of the BFCA and publish the organization's nominations as a prelude to year-end 10-best lists and as an indicator of how this year's Oscars might unfold. But Oscar obviously has a mind of its own, and this year promises a variety of close races.

Although I'm not crazy about lists, I do find it useful to look back on the year and take stock of what Hollywood offered us. The New York Times' critics already have weighed in with their choices and others will, as well. I'll post mine shortly.

You may not agree with every choice, but year-end evaluations serve as a way for audiences to check their own tastes against those of those who write about movies.

Some things to note about this year's BFCA nominations:

There always are anomalies when it comes to awards. This year's nominations include a best-picture nod for Black Panther but none for the movie's director, Ryan Coogler. Sandy Powell was nominated twice in the best costume category, once for Mary Poppins Returns and once for The Favourite, two movies that never will be confused in viewers' minds.

It's also worth noting that the BFCA awards -- unlike Oscar -- are broad-based and more reflective of audience inclinations, including nominations for action movies, sci-fi and horror, and comedy.

The winners will be announced at the Critics' Choice Awards, which will be broadcast on the CW on Jan. 13, 7 PM, eastern time and may involve delayed broadcasts in other time zones. (Check listings.)

Critics' Choice Awards winners

The Shape of Water dominated the 23rd annual Critics' Choice Awards, taking home honors in four categories. The Critics' Choice Awards represent voting by The Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I'm a member. Are the Critics' Choice Awards a bellwether for Oscar? They have been. This year? Who knows. The Golden Globe for best picture went to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Maybe Oscar will surprise us and chart a course of its own. Lady Bird anyone?

'La La Land' tops Critics' Choice Awards

I told you the nominees; now let me share the winners of this year's Critics' Choice awards of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

The 22nd edition of the awards was held last night (Sunday) in Los Angeles. The BFCA, of which I'm a voting member, has made its statement, which already is being seen as early validation for La La Land as this year's top Oscar contender. La La Land led Sunday's field, taking eight Critics' Choice Awards.

'Spotlight' wins Critics' Choice Award

The Critics' Choice Awards of the Broadcast Film Critics Association were announced in a televised broadcast from Santa Monica Sunday night, perhaps providing hints about where Oscar is headed. I'm a voting member of the BFCA, which -- as you'll see -- recognizes more categories than Oscar. The BFCA, for example, makes room for comedies, sci-fi and horror, ensemble acting and outstanding young performers.

Critics' Choice Awards nominees announced

Mad Max: Fury Road topped the list of Critics' Choice Awards nominees, earning a total of 13 nominations across a variety of categories including best picture.
The Critics Choice Awards are given by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, a group to which I belong. This year, the awards show -- the Association's 21st -- will be broadcast live on Jan. 17 by A&E, Lifetime and LMN, and for the first time, will combine both film and TV. (I only vote in the film portion.)

'Boyhood' wins best picture at BFCA awards

The Broadcast Film Critics Association also honored Julianne Moore as 2014's best actress. Moore played a professor suffering from Alzheimer's in Still Alice.

Look, I understand that the awards season can feel interminable. But as a member of The Broadcast Film Critics Association, and as someone who always posts the Association's nominees, I feel I should share this year's winners with you.

The Critics Choice Awards were given out Thursday evening in Los Angeles, the same day as the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced its nominees. You'll note a few differences.

A few notable divergences from Oscar: The BFCA's best animated feature -- The Lego Movie -- was overlooked by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which didn't nominate it in the animated feature category. Although he didn't win, David Oyelowo (also snubbed by Oscar) was a BFCA nominee for best actor. Oyelowo portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma. Selma director Ava DuVernay (overlooked by the Academy, as well) was nominated by the BFCA for best director. She didn't win, either, but made the short list. The BFCA honored Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) for writing the best adapted screenplay. Flynn, who adapted her own novel, was ignored by Oscar, too.

If you're one of those folks who enter Oscar contests, you may want to peruse the BFCA list as you begin to decide where you'll be casting your votes.

Another set of year-end awards

With some divergence from the Golden Globes, The Broadcast Film Critics Association Thursday dispensed its 19th annual Critics' Choice Movie awards. I don't know if the BFCA awards clarify anything for the Oscar race or simply add to the confusion.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association's 280 members represent TV, radio and online outlets in the U.S. and Canada. And, yes, I'm a member.

Will the BFCA lead the way to Oscar?

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) Monday announced nominees for its 19th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Winners will be honored at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014. The show will be broadcast live on the CW Network at 8:00 PM ET.

The BFCA, of which I'm a member, this year produced two frontrunners: 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle tied in voting with 13 nominations each. Gravity took second place with a total of 10 nominations.

And, yes, Scarlett Johansson received a nod in the best supporting actress category for a role in which she's never seen on screen. Johansson provides the voice of a computer operating system in director Spike Jonze's Her.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association is the largest film critics organization in the U.S. and Canada, representing more than 280 television, radio and online critics.

So here's this year's BFCA list of nominees. You can take them as a fairly good predictor of what's likelky to show up on Oscar's short list.

Broadcast critics set for year-end honors

Hugo and The Artist lead the field of Broadcast Film Critics nominees.

Just when you thought it was safe to put your formal wear back in mothballs, it's once again time to dig out the old tuxedo. OK, maybe that's not true for you (or me), but it certainly applies to lots of Hollywood folks who are about to hop a ride on the annual awards express.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association begins the season with its 17th annual awards show, which will be broadcast on VH1 live from the Hollywood Palladium on Jan 12 at 6 p.m. (MST). Comics Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel will host the event.

If you like star-gazing, it's worth knowing that the nominees all tend to show up for BFCA event, which this year features a musical and film tribute to Martin Scorsese, who also happens to have directed one of the year's most nominated movies. Scorsese's Hugo garnered 11 nominations, as did The Artist. Both films were one nomination shy of the record 12 nominations garnered by Black Swan a year ago.

The BFCA (the largest critics' organization in the U.S. and Canada) has some 250 members who ply their trade on television, radio or on line. That includes me. Maybe I'm biased, but I think the BFCA awards are a better bellwether for Oscar than the much-hyped Golden Globes.

Broadcast Critics honor 'Social Network'

The Broadcast Film Critics Association Friday evening picked The Social Network as its best film of the year, beginning what's likely to become a steady stream of top awards for the much-admired movie about the founding of Facebook.

The movie also won awards for David Fincher (best director); Aaron Sorkin (best adapted screenplay); and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (best score).
