Samuel L. Jackson teams with Michael Kinnaman in The Beast, a political action thriller boasting ample explosions, gunfire, and ... well ... not much else.
Under the direction of Renny Harlin, Jackson portrays a US president who finds himself on the run in his heavily fortified car when a rebel militia tires to take over the country.
As a Secret Service agent wounded during an early-picture fight, Kinnaman remains dazed in the backsea as Jackson communicates with the central command that tries to guide him to safety.
The president, a military veteran who has known combat, calculates risk while fretting about the safety of his wife, the woman he credits with turning his life toward public service.
President or not, Jackson’s dialogue contributes to the movie’s solid “R” rating, but neither he nor Kinnaman can keep this one from becoming anything more than another blood-soaked grindhouse junker.
